How Learning Drums Was Life Changing for My Nephew

I learned first hand how much of a benefit learning to play an instrument can have on a person. I’ve always read about the benefits of playing an instrument, and as a musician myself I feel like my life would be very different if I didn’t know how to play guitar. But to actually witness it first hand was amazing, and something I’ll never forget.

Backstory

My nephew has always wanted to play football. Even as a little kid, he seemed to always have a little plush football in his hand that he’d run around with. He had big dreams of going to college on a football scholarship, and even though he realized his aspirations were lofty, he wanted to one day play in the NFL. Unfortunately, that’s never going to happen.

During his 8th grade grade season, my nephew suffered a concussion. While it didn’t cause any significant damage, it was scary. He sat out a few games, but finally made it back to the field. A few games later, he had another concussion.

My brother and my sister-in-law made the difficult decision to not let him play football anymore. Two concussions for an eighth grader is two too many, and it was clear that he was somewhat prone to concussions. The decision hurt him, but I knew he understood.

Where I Stepped In

I saw my nephew was very down from not being able to play football anymore. He seemed to lose interest in things, and as high school came around he started to fall behind in some of his classes. He was diagnosed with a mild case of depression, which is when I had an idea.

I decided that I would purchase a drum set for him. While I knew my brother might hate me for it (since the drum set is at his house and not mine), I knew it would be great for my nephew. So one Saturday afternoon I went out and bought a drum set, put it in the back of my truck, and dropped it off at his house. My nephew’s eyes seemed to light up.

I wanted to make sure he’d learn the instrument, so I searched around for local tutors and found the perfect music teacher for him. I couldn’t even imagine what would happen next.

The Result

My nephew was a natural! He seemed to pick up the drums so quick, I was shocked. That was during his freshman year of high school, and since then things have gotten so much better for him.

During his sophomore year of high school, he joined the marching band as a percussionist. He became so dedicated to his music that people started to take notice.
